Overview

During my time at Studio D Creative, I was lead on this user interface design concept for Chick-fil-A Kids to design an interactive table with games for kids to play while at the restaurant. I was responsible for designing the interface, its structure, and proof-of-concept animations, while collaborating closely with our environmental designer and creative director.

Audience

Kids are the primary audience so we needed to take into consideration of their hand-eye-coordination, the size of their hands, how they would interact with the screen, etc. It needed to be intuitive enough for kids as well as easy enough for them to touch each interactive element.

Play Time

The screen would be in a table at Chick-fil-A, popular fast food chain restaurants, so time spent on this device needed to be carefully considered. We went with 15 minutes as the average length a family sat at a table after doing in-person research.

Orientation

How will people view it? Vertically, horizontally? Split screen? After deliberating and trying out the different options, we went with a vertical format so that the entire table could view the screen in a comfortable manner.

Brainstorm

We brainstormed a list of simple games for kids that we could use on the table: Pong, Tic-Tac-Toe, Trivia, Match 4, and Memory. We then decided on a more casual interactive mode called Chit Chat where families can read conversation prompts and talk to one another.

I created a site map so that we had a clear understanding where screens would go and how they all connect to each other.

Research & 3D Table Model

While researching Chick-fil-A's space, we had taken photos of a potential table. This specific one was not ADA but it would be a general sized table. Our environmental designer 3D modeled the table we had in mind with the screen inside the table (wood finish, red powder).

I designed the visual elements and the user interface while closely working with our developers and the downstairs factory to produce the working prototype.

Screens

We wanted to keep the icons and visuals fun and round so it would be more palatable for kids, the primary audience of the interaction. We also considered how kids (and adults) would navigate from screen to screen, taking into consideration that elements needed to be big as items and food would be on the table. I animated some of the games specifically to show what that could look like for our client and the developers.
