This project was a collaboration with Kono to bring Discord-branded keyboards to life for hardcore users during Snowsgiving 2021 and 100% of the proceeds went to To Write Love on Her Arms. We raised over $500,000 over the course of the campaign!
Custom keyboards has been a hobby of mine for a few years and I was excited to share my knowledge in the space with our team and take lead on what we could do with a custom keycap set here. We settled on a keycap set, case, and cable for the custom visuals that fit within the budget. To give our users additional options, we offered a light theme (white) and dark theme (dark gray) versions of the keyboard that mirrored our in-app default color themes.
I wanted the keyboard to really feel like you were almost in-app so there are many references to the Discord UI and other brand illustrations.
Using a keyboard layout editor, I chose Pantone colors that represent Discord as well as made sure it allowed the keyboard to have some dimensionality with a lighter shade of the official blurple.
Pulling inspiration from the app itself, I explored ideas with the channel names and different ways to incorporate icons and Wumpus (our mascot) into the novelty keycaps.
Keyboard renders were provided by Kono that include the novelties and extra accessories and I designed the final marketing assets.
